Adam woke up. Of course he did. What else was there to do? It was what everyone else had done, so why shouldn't he? It would be a little strange for him not to wake up, if you ask me. You already know who Adam is, of course, but Adam would like to introduce himself. I mean, it would be a little unusual for him not to, wouldn't it?
My name is Adam. There's really not much to say about me at all!
...Adam is right. There is not much to say about him because he is incredibly boring. His life is as dull as his mind.
The date was what you would expect. April the thirteenth, as always. The year was unimportant. Adam began his day by getting out of bed and texting his friend.
ADAM: Hey, are you up?
LUCY: yeah
ADAM: Are you ready for another adventure?
LUCY: i guess
LUCY: but we just finished our last adventure
ADAM: Let's meet up by the cave.
LUCY: alright
Adam went through the motions of getting ready in the morning. Imagine it yourself, I'm sick of writing it for you over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and... Oh... Sorry.
Adam finished packing his backpack and went outside. He began walking toward the cave. And then he got there. Later. He didn't get there right away. Wait wait wait let me try that again, shit. A while later, he arrived at his destination. He waved to his friend.
ADAM: Hey Lucy.
LUCY: Hey.
ADAM: Do you have everything you need?
LUCY: Yeah.
ADAM: Well, let's go.
The two of them entered the cave. Adam pulled out his phone and used it as a flashlight to illuminate the walls.
ADAM: Huh, look at this...
I found many marks scratched into the cave to create a mural of old pictures. I lifted my hand up to touch them and realized that many portions of the wall could be pushed into small depressions. It wasn't all that surprising.
ADAM: There must be some sort of combination that would allow us to pass through a hidden door.
LUCY: Great.
ADAM: I bet there's a ton of clues in here that will help us.
ADAM: And we're going to have to solve lots of other puzzles to get those clues.
ADAM: And then-
LUCY: Shut up.
ADAM: Huh...?
LUCY: Just press the bear pictures on the wall.
LUCY: Then the door will open.
ADAM: Yeah, I know...
LUCY: ...
LUCY: What?
ADAM: Didn't we already do this?
And then I remembered.
ADAM: Lucy! Whatever you do, don't go in this hidden door!
ADAM: Because if you do...
I recalled what I had seen before.
I shuddered at the thought.
He shouldn't know that.
He should not know that.
How the fuck does he know that?!
She backed away from me.
LUCY: Adam...?
LUCY: How about we just go home for now, okay?
ADAM: Then... This means...
ADAM: I saved your life!
I jumped up and down in celebration.
We have to do something about this.
I can't leave with him like this.
I know that.
I'm working on it right now.
I told you time travel would backfire.
Yeah well fuck you too.
ADAM: Are you okay...?
ADAM: You've been standing there silently for a while...
Got it.
Die ASAP to get this all fixed up.
I'm putting a lot of trust in you for this one.
I've got it all under control.
LUCY: Yeah, I'm fine.
LUCY: Let's head back now.
ADAM: Alright.
Lucy and I headed back to our respective homes. I finally breathed a sigh of relief as I laid in my bed, ready to sleep after my long, long day.
It looked like everything was going to be okay after all.
I woke up. I began my day by texting Lucy.
ADAM: Hey, you up?
ADAM: ...
ADAM: Lucy?
I froze with fear. Terrible thoughts filled my head. And after what had happened yesterday, they weren't so far-fetched.
I ran out of my room and over to Lucy's house.
I rang to doorbell three times before opening the door myself.
I ran up the stairs to her room.
I lifted my hand to the doorknob.
I felt my hand shaking.
I grasped the knob and turned it.
And when I pushed the door open...
I saw... I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
I saw...
When I was done, I felt his presence behind me. I turned around and saw him.
ZENON: Listen to me buddy.
ZENON: It's better this way, trust me.
I clenched my fists. I couldn't stand to look at him.
ZENON: Hey, can I tell you something?
ZENON: Now that it's just me and you here, I mean.
ZENON: Let me tell you...
ZENON: I'm glad she's gone.
ZENON: Now I can finally have some peace and quiet around here, you know?
ZENON: ...
ZENON: Nothing to say?
I tried my hardest to ignore him.
I hoped he would leave if I did.
ZENON: Heh...
ZENON: I couldn't tell you how much I want to kill you right now.
ZENON: And it would be so easy, too...
ZENON: Just imagining all the ways...
ZENON: It makes me shudder in delight.
ZENON: But...
ZENON: A promise is a promise.
ZENON: Your death wouldn't be satisfying enough to justify killing you right now.
ZENON: You know what I mean?
ADAM: Why are you here?
ZENON: Oh?
ZENON: You don't want me to be here?
ZENON: ...It's fine.
ZENON: I was really hoping we could work together, too.
ZENON: But I guess you can't have it all in life.
ADAM: What are you even talking about?
ZENON: Hmm...
ZENON: What to do next...
He closed his eyes for a long time.
He only opened them when he spoke again.
ZENON: Ah! I know.
ZENON: Maybe... If I just... So that way... All your fault...! Hehehehe...
ADAM: ...?
He pulled something out of his pocket.
ZENON: Look familiar?
"<=="
ZENON: So how about it?
ZENON: I'm giving you another chance here to fix everything.
ZENON: Isn't that so nice of me?
I hesitated before speaking.
ADAM: ...No.
ADAM: I'm not falling for your tricks.
ADAM: I was lucky I made it out alive last time you did this.
ADAM: It's not worth the risk.
His false smile disappeared.
ZENON: When, exactly, did I ever say you had a choice?
ZENON: When the hell have you ever even had a choice before, in any of your lives?!
ZENON: Do you remember what happened the last time you had a choice?!
ZENON: Of course you don't!
ZENON: And you can thank me for that!!
ZENON: If it weren't for me, you would have died a very long time ago!!!
I meant to speak, I wanted to interrupt him, but... I couldn't.
It wasn't that I was scared, no, far from it.
And still... I couldn't move when he spoke.
ZENON: Listen to me, you lob.
ZENON: I'm only doing what's best for you, do you understand?
ZENON: And what's best for you right now...
ZENON: Is for you to press this button.
He shoved the device in my hand.
ADAM: No!
ADAM: You can't make me!
ZENON: ...
He tilted his head to the side and stared at me with empty, wide eyes.
ZENON: ...Can't I?
Adam pressed the button.
